Sports Funding

Stockton Primary School Sports Funding

At Stockton we recognise the contribution of PE to the health and well-being of the children. We believe that an innovative, varied PE curriculum and extra-curricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all our children.

Our Primary School Sport’s Funding will enable us to continue and extend our provision through employing additional sports professionals and training our staff to deliver in-house quality PE sessions.

What is the Sports Premium?

The government is providing funding to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all their children. Each school will receive £8,000 plus an extra £5 per pupil each year. The money can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.

Purpose of the funding

Schools will have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this. Possible uses of the funding include:

  • Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE
  • New or additional Change4Life sport clubs
  • Paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
  • Providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/sport
  • Running sport competitions, or increasing participation in the school games
  • Buying quality assured professional development modules or material for PE/sport
  • Providing places for pupils on after school sport clubs and residential visits

How we spend our funding

For the academic year 2015-16 we received £8438 for funding sports. We have worked with a specialist sports team to provide first class sports teaching that allows the children to experience a wider than usual range of activities both in lesson time and after school. Teachers were given opportunities to enhance their own skills by observing and working with the coaches.

During this academic year (2016-17) we will receive £8430.  This sports premium is being used to fund specialist support in the delivery of PE session. This allows our children to have excellent provision in P.E. and our staff benefit in terms of professional development.  Our specialist is a member of staff at Southam College, the local outstanding secondary school.  This also benefits our children as they progress on to secondary school as they have the opportunity to get to know some of the secondary school staff before they move on.

Specialist Staff costs £8000.00

New PE Mats £450

Wherever budget allows we also provide transport to sporting fixtures, and subsidise extra-curricular sporting events.

Since the start of the sports premium funding we have seen an increase in pupils engagement and interest in their PE lessons.  Parents have commented that pupils work harder in their PE lessons and they have noticed the improvement.  Uptake for after school sports sessions has been good, and pupils have been more focussed during inter-school competitions.
